How To Cut Out Sink In Butcher Block or Laminate Countertops

If the alignment is off you can loosen the nut on the bottom side and make adjustments. Locate the screws in the center of the slots. It is not necessary to sand off the finish prior to installing the top, as this finish is approved for food service use. This will prevent the twisting of through bolt as you tighten the nut. Use 3 screws to draw down to each angle iron. They are actually upside down. Tighten down the nut until the blocks come fully together and do not slip when firm presurre is applied to them. Finish Butcher Block is intended to be used as a true cutting surface. The flat portion of the through bolt should slide into this slot. A suggested way to make this allowance in attaching wood parts is to counter sink the pilot holes where the wood part attaches to block, or make the pilot holes oversized using a flat head screw and a washer. We do not recommend that blocks with the grain running in different directions be glued together. As you tighten this nut the tops will be drawn together. Repeat this for all the fastening locations along this seam. In other words, when the installation is complete you should feel almost no ridge line on the top surface as you run your hand over the joint. Following these simple instructions will ensure that you get the best out of your butcher block for years to come. This installation guide is for tops which have been predrilled for Tite Joint Fasteners. Great craftsmanship and care goes into the manufacturing of our butcher block surfaces. Any thin metal rod such as a finish nail will do in tightening the nut. Please familiarize yourself with the following information prior to installation. Where attaching the block to a cabinet base is not possible, attach one or more angle irons to the underside of the block. Be sure to make allowances for this dimensional change. If the top is too warped to fasten down, allow both sides of the block to be exposed. Post-form countertops are popular. Be sure to allow for expansion and contraction. Clean it like you would any cutting surface, not allowing water to stand on the surface for any length of time. If a butcher block top requires cutting for proper installation—either for a size adjustment or for a sink or cook top cutout—the cut edges need to be refinished immediately to prevent potential cracking along the glue lines. The U shaped opening should be inserted so that it is towards the edge of the block. For the purposes of showing this installation we have the tops upside down. On the other hand, although more expensive, a well fit miter joint is a handsome installation detail. Often the fasteners are attached to the top but they may have come loose in transit. Michigan Maple Block Co. Measure your block prior to installation to determine if it has changed in dimension. Any adjustment to the position of one block relative to the other block should be made at this time. This is important because wood is hygro-scopic and will gain and loose moisture in lock step with its surroundings. Occasionally the block may take on additional moisture during transport, especially in spring and fall months. This is temporary. The straight rod shown in the picture above is an optional piece of equipment. Most cabinet manufacturers provide corner blocks within the cabinet for attaching the countertop to the cabinet base. Its rich appearance, distinctive grain patterns and color variations are the purest expressions of nature. Place it in the hole in the bottom face of the block. The wider the block, the greater the expansion. There should be 2 round end caps for each pin. Step 3 — Inserting the Biscuits The biscuits provided are to help in the alignment of the two tops. Commonly, cabinet manufacturers build in full-coverage dust covers atop base cabinets. This will reduce the chances the tops are out of alignment top to bottom. While it is it is NOT necessary putting a bead of flexible clear silicone will not hurt the block. The following sequence shows installation procedures. All countertop blocks should be attached to bases on or at least near all four corners. To add a gap for proper airflow, place 4 washers, one in each corner, as spacers, before mounting the butcher block in place. This condition is caused by the contraction of the butt ends and not that of the center part of the block. Please note that the second set of end caps are shown sitting on the block. This will allow the top to expand and contract more evenly. Butcher Block is intended to be used as a true cutting surface. Warping is caused by the expansion of either the top or bottom surface. The is important to make inserting the second end nut easier. Butcher Block does not come in this shape, however many installers will use a hand router to round the front edge of the block to conform to the front edge of the post-form top. Once the top has become adjusted to the new installation environment, the moisture content will equalize and the panel will straighten out. Separate pieces are easier to install and any variations in this corner angle can be compensated for on the job.

For the best results in the installation of your butcher block surface, it is important to read and follow these instructions.

Attaching the Counter Top Do not set the counter top with adhesive caulk.

By simply mounting the top with a gap to accommodate airflow, it will virtually eliminate the risk of cracking, delaminating and warping. Stains can be cleaned off with finger nail polish remover or bleach—neither of these two substances can hurt the finish— and although the finish is durable, it will scratch. Insert the biscuits into the groves in the edge of one of the blocks. Thread the bolt into the hole of the end cap and tighten just enough to hold the assembly loosely together. Under normal conditions the block will return to the original dimension during the winter months and will expand slightly during the summer months when the humidity is greater. Wood is a hygroscopic material, it continues to gain and lose moisture throughout its existence. These cracks can occur on the glue line where the wood is the weakest or in the lamination itself. The answer is yes. This condition is easily corrected by placing the block on the cabinet bases and drawing the block down to a level position with wood screws. The flange should be completely visible in this second hole. If so, allow the block to acclimate to the interior in which it will be installed. This is the way the seam should look on the top side of the block. Gaining moisture swells the block slightly, loosing moisture shrinks it. Be careful not to drill through the top. This picture is to help you visualize how the Tite Joint Fastener works. Where a manufacturer has not made such allowances, use an undersized screw with a washer. Do not set the counter top with adhesive caulk. This dry fitting procedure is to insure you have the blocks in the proper configuration and that the holes are drilled in the proper place. The opposite side of the end cap is a slot. Some manufacturers of cabinets and appliances take into consideration expansion and contraction by providing slotted screw holes. To remedy the condition, measure and adjust the relative humidity accordingly. The finish is formulated to repel most household solvents. Use either a lacquer or a clear satin polyurethane finish. You may have to work from the bottom side. This is natural and having a tight, but not to tight seam allows for this movement. As the blocks begin to snug up they should be checked for alignment both up and down and side to side. Do not use oil only, as it will not provide a permanent seal. For cook top cutouts, applying an aluminum heat reflective tape with attached insulation after the edge has been refinished will dissipate heat into the cabinet below. This qualifies as a solid-topped base, as does covering or mounting over an existing sub-surface of a different material. As a final note it should be said that this system has been flawless in its performance. Instead, securely fasten the top to the base unit using appropriate length wood screws. Be sure to check through all your packaging prior to discarding it. If installing a back splash along with the countertop, attach it to the surface, not to the back edge that would be against the wall. It provide a tight fit and yet allows for slight movement of the wood as the environment around the butcher block tops changes. This picture shows the second end cap installed. This temporary condition will be correct itself as the moisture content of the block is equalized on both the top and bottom surfaces. Now you can use the rod provided or any thin metal rod such as a finish nail to tighten the ball nut. They will need to be flipped up into the hole as you will see in the next step. Check to see that you have complete sets of everything.
